When you’re looking for a new job, there are so many things to consider. Your CV has to be ship shape, you really need to do your research about the company who are interviewing you and you have the pressure of the interview itself. Of course, when it comes to interviews themselves, we worry so much about what we want to say without thinking about what our body language is screaming over the top of our voice.
So, what are the common body language mistakes to avoid at all costs?
The way you are sitting in your chair says a lot about how important this job is to you. Slouching and leaning back in your chair gives the aura of a lazy or arrogant person, whilst leaning forward can be misconstrued as a sign of aggression. Sit up straight and try to be comfortable.
Crossing your arms is a very defensive stance to take, and can make you appear far less approachable. Holding your arms gently on your lap makes you loon more open to conversation and to the interviewer themselves.
Interviewers will expect you to be nervous, so a certain amount of fidgeting is to be expected, but excessive fidgeting does give off a lot of nervous energy and work to distract the interviewer and display a lack of confidence.
Whilst maintaining eye contact is important, there is nothing so creepy as staring. Don’t be afraid to look down or away for a moment to gather your thoughts.
Your facial expression should match the enthusiasm in your voice. If it doesn’t, it is very easy for the interview to suggest that actually, you really don’t care that much about the role. Be enthusiastic with your voice AND your face.
